Today our talk is going to be about butterflies!

Here is the colouring sheet for today, feel free to print it out and let your child colour it. While they colour it converse with them about butterflies.

Suggested interactions:
“I like/dislike butterflies because x”
“Was a butterfly born as a butterfly?”     (No, it was born as a caterpillar)
“What colours will you use for your butterfly?”
“Why do butterflies have patterned wings?”         (To camouflage or frighten other animals)

“What does camouflage mean?”     (To hide by looking just like something else. eg. looking like tree bark, looking like  a leaf)

“Why do butterflies have dust on their wings?”     (The ‘dust’ ((Not dust)) is there to help them absorb heat from the sun so they can be warm enough to fly)

“What do butterflies eat?”   (Most of them eat nectar, some eat dead animals, some eat tree sap)
“Do all butterflies eat?”        (No some butterflies don’t eat, they survive on the food that the caterpillar ate)

“How to they eat it?”          (With their super long tongues)
“Do butterflies drink water?”   (Yes, caterpillars don’t but butterflies do. )

Come up with your own questions and comments for them. Consider going outside and trying to spot a butterfly.

TODAY’S PROJECT:

“Take a picture of something that you think a butterfly would have for breakfast”

Letting them take the picture themselves would be best.

If any of you do not have access to flowers, tree sap or detritus, look for a picture online. Let them decide what words to search for and let them select the best picture.
